Chiropractic Care Can Effectively Eliminate Shoulder Pain

By Zoe Auld Langley

Shoulder pain is a common complaint which causes many people to seek medical attention, this is largely due to the fact that it is the most movable joint in the body and is therefore vulnerable to damage. The shoulder joint consists of a ball and socket that is further supported by the rotator cuff tendons and several ligaments, any of which can be the source of discomfort. The skilled care of a chiropractor can provide patients with an effective, drug-free approach to healing.

The amount of discomfort felt typically depends on the specific issue causing it. In some cases there may inflammation and swelling of the soft tissues of the rotator cuff joint, or the pain may originate in the neck area, due to a misaligned vertebra. Pain must be evaluated early on to prevent chronic problems from developing.

Chiropractic medicine is focused on identifying and eliminating the cause of any adverse condition in the body, rather than just minimizing the symptoms. The course of treatment recommended will depend on what the chiropractor determines to be causing the discomfort. An accurate diagnosis is essential to a successful therapy experience and a full recovery.

As a holistic discipline, chiropractic care considers the patient's entire health picture when planning the most suitable treatment for him or her. The practitioner will inquire about aspects of the patient's lifestyle such as diet, exercise habits, and body mechanics, and he or she will also take a health history of the client. A physical examination will be done to assess range of motion, and if further information is needed, a CT scan or MRI may be ordered.

Once the chiropractor has identified the problem, the client will begin therapy. Spinal adjustments are the front-line treatment used by most practitioners. Manual pressure applied is effective for restoring alignment to vertebrae that have shifted out of place. This technique can be used on the cervical spine and also on the shoulder joint itself if necessary. Correcting misalignment relieves swelling and inflammation of the soft tissues surrounding the joint.

The chiropractor may also prescribe a series of stretching exercises for the client to perform at home. These movements help gradually restore normal range of motion, improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and strengthen affected muscles in such a way that a recurrence is less likely to happen. The patient may also be advised to make some changes to his or her body mechanics in order to speed up the healing process. Proper posture, particularly for those who spend long periods of time sitting each day can play a significant role in correcting shoulder pain issues.

The chiropractor may also use other treatments to help ease the patient's pain, such as traction, massage, and hot and cold therapy. These techniques can ease inflammation in the joint which can cause discomfort, and will often be implemented in conjunction with exercises and adjustments.

Chiropractors treat shoulder pain in a natural manner that represents a breakaway from the heavy reliance on the use of NSAIDs, steroids, and injections that have become standard in mainstream medicine, and actually hinder healing. Finding the cause and correcting it is key to patients enjoying a full recovery and total healing being allowed to take place.
